How To Select Affiliate Programs
by Abe Cherian, Multiple Stream Media. www.abecherian.com

The greatest attraction about affiliate programs is that it's simple to get people to join them.

They have nothing to lose as there's no cost to them, it just takes them a few minutes to get set up, and they have the potential to make them a better income.

A visitor is enticed to click through to your site by posting a simple banner ad or text link on their web site. It could be through an email letter and you do everything else. You walk the visitor through your web site, close the sale, process their payment, fulfill their order, and handle any customer service issues.

You track the number of orders each affiliate sends you, determine their commissions, and make sure that they get paid for their work. You make sure all the big problems are solved and they get paid for referring new customers to your site.

Sounds simple doesn't it?

Before going into the specifics, there's one thing you must know about recommendations...If you tell others about a product or service you qualify as great that is priced within reason, your customers and subscribers will continue to trust you and be interested in future recommendations that you make. This means they've had a good experience. If they have a bad experience, they will not explore any new offers you send to them!

Stay clear of the quick sale and only recommend products or services that you trust and believe in. It is imperative you present those products or services just as you would use them yourself. And we know it's really hard to honestly recommend a product or service that you have no experience with yourself. If you feel comfortable about joining a specific affiliate program, it is highly recommended you do some research first.

To feel comfortable about a product or service, sign-up and try them out yourself. Chat with others who have used it, and always make sure it's of high quality that comes from a company who offers superior customer service. If they have a great reputation, then they can back it up with their strong guarantee. Again, if you destroy your reputation by promoting something your customer or subscriber has a bad experience with, it's going to reflect on your profits poorly.

Should you join high commission affiliate programs?

You'll want to look for programs to pay between 20% to 50% of the profits on each product or service sold. Search for companies who understand the value of new customers you refer, and who appreciate your efforts enough to compensate you generously. Only consider joining programs that show a similar level of respect for their affiliates.

When you locate a program that fits this model, you'll want to make sure their web site conversion rate is high enough so you don't waste time directing traffic to something that's not going to sell. Check out their sales message, because it's your job to get people to their site, and it must sell. You've done your part when you direct visitors to their site, it's their sales message that's supposed to do the job!

The good news about the majority of affiliate programs that pay higher commissions is they use software that tracks all of your sales. This is extremely important. If the company wants you to succeed, chances are they provide you with cookie tracking and sales stats. You'll want to make sure they provide this type of tracking because it will help you with credited sales. This way when a visitor returns to purchase at a later date, their "cookie tracking" will credit you for that sale.

Features to look for

- Pay-per-Sale (%% from sales).
- Pay-per-Sale (flat rate).
- Pay-per-Click (For unique visitors).
- Payout percentages.
- Recurring duration.
- Banner and text linking codes system.
- Payout amount per affiliate (%).
- 1st and 2nd tier affiliate commissions.
- View statistic of all sales.
- Cookie Tracking.

Every affiliate program you join should provide statistics that's in real time, and you're given a username and password to access your own sales information. This way you'll know how well different banners, text links and other promotional material is performing. Always test each one to see which one will deliver the best results.

Look for programs that help you maximize your sales. A good affiliate program will provide you with everything you need to be successful. They'll provide you with traffic-generating banners, text links, and letters. They will inform you which techniques work well in which circumstances.

In summary, choosing a reputable company requires doing some research. Be advised about the different clauses and agreements they make you agree to and sign before you join. Read everything over and feel comfortable about the company before you sign-up. Take a few moments and give them a call first to make sure their products or services are right for you. The more you truly believe in their system, the greater the outcome will be for your sales commissions.
